Throughout the letter, while the identity of the writer is not yet known, she tells the reader that she has several family members all involved in the war, all of whom she is proud of- 'I am so very proud of having two brothers in uniform, and a cousin too as well as an aunt who is a nurse.' One also understands that one brother, Tim, is actually a twin and is too young for battle, thus having false identification to fight and the other brother, Doug. The letter then goes on to explain a girl's various activities at the school for ladies, mostly said with a air of scorn, which clearly expresses the writer's disinterest in 'feminine' activities. This already tells us that the new protagonist is a young female, during World War I in England.
